Last week I looked at the huge savings to be had by ‘starting’ your journey in Europe rather than the UK. In that post I made a comment that I didn’t fully elaborate on, I said:
“These immense savings are not limited to flights in economy either. Using this method you can often come across business class flights ex-EU for the same price as economy flights to the same destination from the UK”
Well, the following is a perfect illustration of exactly such a scenario.
Qatar Airways have launched a range of Valentine’s Day sale fares out of cities such as Oslo, Helsinki, Sofia, Copenhagen and Stockholm. These offers feature both economy and business class prices and in the spirit of Valentine’s Day, are based on travelling with a companion!
The best way to leverage these deals is during peak periods where prices can reach ludicrous levels. Although there are some blackout periods for various destinations, I pulled up the following examples from Sofia with little trouble in and around the summer holiday period.
Fly to Johannesburg for £918 pp in business class:
For reference the cheapest direct economy flights from Heathrow on the same dates are £976 per person.
Fly to Singapore for £845 pp in business class:
For reference the cheapest direct economy flights from Heathrow on the same dates are £965 per person.
HOW TO BOOK
The best way to go about this is to head over to the Qatar website and search for your preferred destination. The prices to look for are labelled in red as “Business Promo” on the left hand side of the results, as illustrated in the screenshot below.
These deals must be booked by midnight on the 15th February (local time).
You can travel up until the 15th December 2017.
Although this has been marketed as a companion fare, and you must travel with a companion to access these prices, you are not limited to just 2 travelers. This can be scaled up for parties of 4,6 and even 8.
ANY OTHER BENEFITS?
The great fares are not the only reason you need to book. Much like the £1500 Malaysian Airlines business class flights to Australia from the end of January, flights taken on Qatar Airways can be credited to British Airways Executive Club. If you elected to book flights to many of the destinations available in this promotion, this routing would earn you 560 Tier Points.
If you were then to fly or have already flown 4 BA flight segments during your membership year, this trip would take you most of the way towards BA Silver status which requires 600 Tier Points. This is a valuable perk which allows you lounge access, additional baggage and the ability to choose your seat for free at time of booking, among other benefits.
VERDICT
These deals can be great value especially around busy periods. It is a wonderful way to experience Qatar Airways’ fabulous business class product across some of their newest aircraft. If you can make the departure airports and times work for you, this one is well worth booking.
