EDIT: Friday 09/06/2017 – 11:30 AM – Was this too popular? Marriott has modified the sign-up page for this offer. Currently, there is no mention of the bonus 1,000 miles offer. I will issue a further update once it becomes clear if this is permanent or just a temporary glitch.

Don’t sign up at this point as you are unlikely to receive any miles!

It may be my imagination, but offers like these have been a bit thin on the ground recently. There was a time, about a year or two ago that there were regular opportunities to pick up a couple of thousand Avios at no cost.

Well, here is a nice little earner courtesy of Marriott Rewards. For the most part, hotel loyalty schemes don’t have a fixed bonus available when you join your their schemes although bonuses have been known to come and go. Even when a bonus is offered, it is usually only triggered after your first stay at one of the chain’s properties.

This new offer though, has no such restrictions and is a relatively sizeable one too.

Currently, when you sign up to join Marriott Rewards, you will receive 1,000 Avios points.

And there are no requirements to complete any additional activity, such as a stay, either.

Marriott Rewards is the loyalty scheme for Autograph, Marriott, JW Marriott, Courtyard and Ritz-Carlton hotels.

What if I am already a member of Marriott Rewards – how to maximise this offer?

All is not lost. Perhaps your partner or another family member hasn’t yet enrolled with Marriott and they can earn the bonus.

Remember, British Airways Executive Club (BAEC) allows you to pool your miles in a household account with up to 6 people who live with you. And Marriott doesn’t place any minimum age requirement to be a member of their program.

That means you could potentially enrol relatives or even children who are members of your BA household account as Marriott Rewards members and 1,000 Avios can become 6,000 Avios…

What if I don’t collect Avios?

Don’t worry there’s something for you too. Marriott Rewards are offering 1,000 miles in a choice of the following frequent flyer programs upon enrolment:

Aeromexico ClubPremier
Air Canada Aeroplan
Avianca-TACA LifeMiles
British Airways Executive Club
Etihad Guest
Lufthansa Miles and More
Qatar Privilege Club

In fact, taking 1,000 Lufthansa Miles and More miles may actually be a better deal than 1,000 Avios given that Lufthansa miles are significantly more difficult to earn in the UK.

Any other benefits?

Yes. You are automatically registered to earn double miles on all of your stays for the 90 day period following your enrollment.

This page on ba.com explains how many miles you would ordinarily earn at the different Marriott brands for your stays. During this promotion, it seems you would earn 4 Avios per $1 at many of the Marriott brands. That’s a pretty decent return.

How to enrol

You need to register via this link here.

  • The terms state that the bonus miles will be credited “at the end of the month in which enrollment occurred”.
  • Double miles will be credited 4-6 weeks after the stay is completed.
  • There is some confusion over the deadline for this deal. The landing page for the offer suggests the 9th September 2017 as the last date to earn double miles, but the offer T&C’s, found here, suggest 31st December 2017 for the enrollment bonus.

To be safe I would recommend registering today.

Verdict

If you haven’t yet enrolled in the Marriott Rewards scheme, this is an excellent incentive to do so. You could earn some otherwise difficult-to-come-by miles with the likes of Air Canada or Lufthansa Miles and More or just take the Avios. Scaling it up by registering other members of your household account (with their permission of course) could net a very tidy return indeed.
