One of the most-read articles on Tricks of the Trade thus far has been the “How to buy cheap Avios” piece that was published back in February. In my verdict that day I wrote:

“I have always maintained that the best way to rack up large amounts of Avios is by diversifying your collection methods and trying to earn them via as many different sources as possible”.

Well, the following stays true to that maxim – with points earning possibilities aplenty available from various fast food/takeaway outlets.

Deliveroo

This is the most wide-ranging option in the article today, with a number of special offers running.

As a fairly heavy user of Deliveroo, I have long wished they offer some sort of partnership that enabled users to earn miles/points and I was delighted when they obliged via a link up with avios.com this summer.

There are currently two offers from Deliveroo running concurrently that will allow you to earn Avios.

First-time customers

If you have never used Deliveroo before, you will receive 500 Avios when you make your first order before 23:59 PM on 1st September 2017.

You must enter voucher code AVIOSUK in the ‘Add a promo code’ box at checkout at Deliveroo.co.uk or within the Deliveroo app.

Small print:

  • To qualify for the 500 bonus Avios, you must have a minimum first order value of £15 – excluding any Deliveroo delivery charges.
  • You will receive an email from Deliveroo within 30 days of the ‘qualifying spend’ with details of an Avios voucher. You will then use the link provided or visit aviosvouchers.com to redeem your voucher.
  • Avios will then be added to your account within 5 days.

Returning customers

Even if you have used Deliveroo before, you can earn a bonus 500 Avios for every £100 you spend with Deliveroo before 23:59 PM on 1st September 2017.

As above, you must enter voucher code AVIOSUK in the ‘Add a promo code’ box at checkout at Deliveroo.co.uk or within the Deliveroo app.

Small print:

  • Transactions can be cumulative i.e. you can have 4 qualifying orders of £25 each, and still be eligible for the bonus Avios.
  • To be a qualifying order though, you must have a minimum basket order value of £15 – excluding any Deliveroo delivery charges.
  • You will receive an email from Deliveroo within 30 days of the ‘qualifying spend’ with details of an Avios voucher. You will then use the link provided or visit aviosvouchers.com to redeem your voucher.
  • Avios will then be added to your account within 5 days.
  • You can earn multiple vouchers during the promotional period.

From my perspective, the T&C’s are unclear as to when the last date to redeem earned Avios vouchers is. The terms mention both 1st November 2017 and 1st August 2018. To be safe, I would recommend redeeming any vouchers you earn immediately to avoid any confusion.

The full T&C’s can be found at the foot of the offer page here.

To be honest, even if you have an existing Deliveroo account, there is no reason why everybody cannot earn this welcome bonus. Simply have your partner/family member/colleague who has never used the service before, create an account and have them order for you.

What about earning miles on a regular basis?

Until 1st September, if the restaurant you are ordering from features on Deliveroo, you should definitely be using the offer I’ve outlined above, as it will give you the biggest return in terms of mileage.

But I thought I’d investigate the other options available if you: a) just fancy a pizza or b) are looking to earn miles beyond the end of the Deliveroo promotion.

BA Avios

The below ‘retailers’ are available via both the avios.com eStore and the ba.com eStore.

  • Hungry House – 5 miles per £1
  • Domino’s – 3 miles per £1
  • Just Eat – 2 miles per £1
  • Pizza Hut Delivery – 1 mile per £1
  • Papa John’s – 1 mile per £1

Note: It is worth checking the offer pages of the individual retailers, certain ones will offer a higher/lower reward rate depending on whether you are a new/existing customer.

Virgin – Flying Club miles

The offers below can be accessed via the Virgin Shops Away shopping portal.

  • Hungry House – 4 miles per £1
  • Domino’s – 2 miles per £1
  • Just Eat – 1 mile per £1
  • Papa John’s – 1 mile per £1
  • Pizza Hut Delivery – 1 mile per £1

Note: As with the Avios offer above, it is worth checking the offer pages of the individual retailers, certain ones will offer a higher/lower reward rate depending on whether you are a new/existing customer.

Verdict

These offers are a great little extra, enabling you to earn miles from something you were doing anyway. Your decision of which portal to click through will depend on whether you are concentrating on Avios or Virgin miles at the moment. I would say though, that wherever possible, the Deliveroo offer is where you should be ‘directing your spend’ for the time being – to ensure you get the highest return on your spend.

Don’t forget that it is possible to earn multiple 500 Avios vouchers during the promotional period depending on how much spend you can put through Deliveroo in that time.
