Acronyms are frequently used in the world of air/hotel miles and points and that often leaves newcomers and those unfamiliar with a particular term scratching their head trying to decipher the lingo.

Although we try to avoid unexplained acronyms at Tricks of the Trade, the occasional abbreviation does creep in.

With that in mind, I’ve put together this glossary of abbreviations that you can revisit and refer back to at any point.

  • AUP = Aiport upgrade
  • (BA) 2-4-1 = British Airways companion voucher
  • BA = British Airways
  • BAEC = British Airways Executive Club
  • BAPP – British AirwaysAmerican Express Premium Plus Credit Card
  • BOB = Buy on board
  • BRG = Best Rate Guarantee
  • CCR = Concorde Room
  • CE = Club Europe – British Airways short-haul business class
  • CW = Club World – British Airways long-haul business class
  • EF = ExpertFlyer
  • ET = Euro traveller – British Airways short-haul economy class
  • Ex-EU = Often a flight that departs from a European city apart from the UK. Used to avoid taxes and surcharges that accompany flying out of the UK. See many of the regular Qatar Airways sales.
  • F = First (class)
  • FFP = Frequent flyer program
  • FT = Flyertalk
  • GC = Galleries Club
  • GF = Galleries First
  • GGL = Gold Guest List
  • HEX = Heathrow Express
  • HH = Hilton Honors
  • HHA = Household account
  • HR = Heathrow Rewards
  • HUCA = Hang up call again – a good technique when encountering a stubborn/inexperienced customer service agent who can’t accomplish whatever it is you’re trying to do.
  • IB+ = Iberia Plus
  • IDB = Involuntary Denied Boarding
  • IFE = Inflight entertainment
  • IRROPS = Irregular operations
  • J = Business (class)
  • LCC = Low cost carrier
  • M&M = Miles and More
  • MCT = Minimum Connection Time
  • MR = Membership Rewards/Mileage run/Mattress run/Marriott Rewards
  • MS = Manufactured spending
  • OP = Original poster
  • Op-up = Operational upgrade
  • OW = Oneworld
  • O/W = Oneway
  • PE = Premium economy
  • POUG – Pro-active online upgrade
  • PRG = Preferred Rewards Gold Credit Card
  • QR = Qatar Airways
  • RFS = Reward Flight Saver
  • RTW = Round the world
  • SPG = Starwood Preferred Guest
  • T-355 = 355 days before departure. Also, the date when BA releases a guaranteed 4 Economy and  2 business class redemption seats in advance.
  • TP = Tier point(s)
  • UC = Upper Class – Virgin Atlantic’s business class
  • UUA = Upgrade using Avios
  • VS = Virgin Atlantic
  • WoH = World of Hyatt
  • WT = World Traveller (British Airways economy class)
  • WT+ = World Traveller Plus (British Airways Premium economy)
  • Y = Economy
  • YMMV = Your mileage may vary – I.e. what worked for one person may not work for another.
  • YQ = Fuel surcharge(s)
