A few months back Marriott revealed that you would be able to earn up to 45,000 Marriott Rewards free points per year via social media interactions.

Earning free Marriott points by way of social media isn’t a new thing – as far as I can remember this has been going on (at least on a semi-consistent basis) since at least 2015. However, to be honest, I didn’t have the patience to complete numerous tasks that would collect around 25 points each. Points earning was also capped at 2,500 points per year – not worth much.

But then Marriott announced a campaign called #RewardsPoints which featured the new cap of 45,000 points per year and seemed to have boosted the number of points awarded for each task completed – suddenly this looked more interesting.

How to earn points

The first step is you need to link your Marriott account with your social media profiles using this link here.

If you are worried about privacy etc you could always set up a secondary Twitter account to use for promotions like this one.

Marriott social media campaign

You can earn 250 free points for each social media account that you link. And a further 125 points each for following Marriott Rewards on Twitter and Instagram.

The good news is that these points should post to your Marriott account within 10-15 minutes – mine posted almost instantly.

Extra Points Sunday promotion launched

In mid-September, Marriott announced ‘Extra Points Sundays’ – as part of their NFL partnership – offering a generous 1,000 free points each week for answering a simple trivia question.

To give you an idea, here was this week’s question:

Even if you don’t know the first thing about the NFL – these questions shouldn’t pose too much trouble. A quick Google search or scan of the replies so far should tell you all you need to know!

Just click the ‘Reply’ button and make sure your response includes the hashtag #RewardsPoints.

Anything else to be aware of?

There are a couple of things to be aware of here:

  • You must connect your Marriott and Twitter accounts in order to successfully participate in ‘Extra Points Sundays’.
  • Make sure your Twitter settings aren’t set to Private or you won’t be eligible to receive points. Marriott haven’t made this very clear and I fell foul of this earlier on in the promotion.
  • Follow us on Twitter – @xexecTOTT for a heads-up when a bonus points opportunity is available. We’ll retweet the ‘Extra Points Sundays’ questions as they appear.
  • Points awarded for answering these questions can be used any way you like – except they don’t count as a qualifying activity to reset the 2-year expiration date on your points.

Verdict

This promotion is a terrific way to pick up some free points and is certainly engaging more and more people as the weeks go on. This Sunday’s question had over 23,000 replies.

Remember that you can convert Marriott points to Starwood (SPG) points freely and instantly at a 3:1 ratio – making each (free) 1,000 Marriott points worth 333 SPG points. Given that hotel reward redemptions start at just 2,000 SPG points, this promotion has practically netted participants a free hotel stay! Alternatively, free nights at Marriott properties start at just 7,500 points.

There’s every sign that Marriott intends to run this promotion through the NFL season which hopefully means more free points in the bank.
